From strength to strength

17 July 2008

As the Glamorgan Welsh for Adults Centre marks its first birthday this month, staff and students are celebrating after 1700 people have signed up to learn the language in the area.

The Centre has exceeded it targets set by the Welsh Assembly Government by more than 40% this year and the number of staff employed by the Centre has grown from 3 to 14.

Last year one of the Centre’s top learners, Julie MacMillan scooped the prestigious ‘Learner of the Year’ title at the National Eisteddfod. Another student, Jenny Henn from Ebbw Vale who learns through the Centre’s classes in Merthyr is in the final for the title this year when the Eisteddfod comes to Cardiff.

Over the next year the Centre will embark on some new iniatives including further courses in the Bridgend area, courses on a Saturday morning, and courses aimed specifically at teachers.

Head of the Centre Helen Prosser commented, “We have had a fantasic first year and the enthusiasm of our students and their dedication to learning the language is impressive. Julie’s outstanding success at last year’s Eisteddfod is testament to her hard work and the work of our tutors. We wish this year’s finalist Jenny every success in the competition.”
