Welsh learner of the year 27 August 2008
The Welsh Learner of the Year competition is one of the main events at the National Eisteddfod. We are very pleased to say that the Welsh Centre has a history of success in this event. In 2005, Rob Hughes reached the final of the competition, and has since become one of our Welsh tutors. In 2007, one of our learners, Julie MacMillan won the title of Welsh Learner of the Year. Julie was nominated for the competition by the Headmaster of Ysgol Gynradd Ynyswen, who appreciates how much Julie does voluntarily for the school. This year the judges, Aled Davies, Sara Edwards and Siân Lloyd were looking for someone who had mastered the language and could inspire others to do the same. One of the four finalists this year was one of our learners, Jenny Henn from Cwm. Jenny was nominated by staff at the Merthyr Welsh Centre. Jenny is a member of ‘Merched y Wawr’, attends coffee mornings and socialises with her friends in Welsh. Jenny showed her sparkling personality and was very natural throughout the competition. Jenny said that she had a fantastic time. It was a good opportunity to meet people from all over Wales. A great experience in her opinion. |
